How safe is it to travel El Salvador in 2023?
- 5 minutes reading
While backbacking Central America, our first idea was to avoid El Salvador because of safety reasons. It is true that from a European perspective, this country doesn’t seem to be the best place to travel because of many issues and scandals. However, as we started our trip in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, we met so many people who visited El Salvador, and most of them were telling us how amazing it was, how friendly people were and how beautiful landscapes were. Indeed, tourism is slowly coming back since the president Nayib Bukele ordered the construction of mega prison and the country began making massive arrests in response to a surge in gang violence.
Well, we couldn’t just cross the country without checking it out. Spoiler alert: it was the best decision ever!
Our experience in El Salavador
We were lucky to discover a tiny part of the country in April 2023. During 10 days, we explored El Tunco and Santa Ana areas.
We never felt unsafe and absolutely enjoyed this adventure and the authenticity of this suprising country. The only sign of criminality that we encountered was the fact that they were armed security staff in front of most shops which did feel strange at first... but also kind of reassuring.
Except of that, El Salvador was incredible. From surfing beautiful spots in El Tunco to hiking the seven waterfalls near Santa Ana, eating our weight in Pupusas everywhere or encouraging the local football team with the locals... we had the best time and only wished we could have stay longer.
Most importantly, locals are thrilled to see tourists again and always keen on helping out, which is very appreciable. For example, hitchhiking works so well! We got picked up in less than 5 minutes each time we tried.
In a few words
Keep it mind that yes, the criminality in El Salvador exists and any traveler should get informed before getting there and while exploring. We believe that with a few general rules, discovering El Salvador is an epic adventure. Here are some tips:
- ask the locals which neighbourhoods/ cities to avoid
- don’t ever drive at night
- dress up simply and don’t show off
- in few words : common sense, just like in any other countries :)
